It is not without reason that God has revealed Himself throughout centuries and generations and not in a short span of time or a single generation. He is far too big and awesome to be revealed sufficiently enough for our needs in a short span of time and one or two generations. God’s greatness, scripture tells us, is unsearchable – without limit and impossible to process or quantify. God is infinite.
Psalms 145:3
Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised,
and his greatness is unsearchable.
There’s no end or limit to His greatness. Ergo it is impossible for us to acquire sufficient or a “working” knowledge of God through a revelation of His character in His dealings with His people over only a short span of time and limited to a few generations. God’s person and character is so great that it is even impossible to contain or comprehend it.
It should be our quest in life to know this God who is beyond knowledge – if that makes sense. For instance scripture tells us that God’s love surpasses knowledge and that His peace surpasses understanding.
Ephesians 3:19
and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
Philippians 4:7
And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
We may not, of course, fully know or understand God but whatever knowledge of Him we manage to secure is to our benefit; it is, after all, what gives us access to His provision for us for our lives and for Christ likeness.
2 Peter 1:3
His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence,
It is through the knowledge of God who’s greatness is without limit, compared to our ability to comprehend, that we we’ll tap into the fullness of life God intended for and provided us with in Christ.
John 10:10
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.
This, is God’s stated intention in Christ for you and for me – abundant life. And it has been made possible, access to it has been granted through Christ who brought us knowledge of the Father in Himself –
John 1:18
No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.
And John 17:2-3
since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.
Our lives are richer and fuller for knowing more of God through Christ. The greater our knowledge of God is, the closer we get to the life of abundance God intended for us in Christ.
The life God intended for you is only His knowledge away from you. He has made it accessible to you in Christ.
