Overcome!

1 John 5:4
For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.

What a powerful and sweeping statement this is!

Is it truly possible for everyone, literally everyone who is born of God to be an overcomer when it comes to the world? Is it even remotely possible let alone universally acceptable as this passage of scripture proclaims?

Indeed, it is, the secret’s out – Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? 1 John 5:5

Because He who truly believes that Jesus is the Son of God, in every sense of the word “believe” as understood by scripture, is born of God.

Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves whoever has been born of him. 1 John 5:1

Subsequently the seed of God is within Him. It is what this seed of God gives rise to, i.e. the new creation, that is perfectly capable of overcoming the world. Full stop. Nothing else can. Only that which is born of God has the inherent capability within itself (as it is a result of God’s seed) to overcome the world because God is indomitable and He has also overcome the world – John 16:33
I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

It is first and foremost God’s overcoming nature in us (having been born of Him as a result of faith in Christ) that guarantees our overcoming the world. We have been given this nature, are born of it as a result of putting our faith in Jesus Christ the Son of God. John 1:12 — 13
But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. These are born of God – by virtue of simply receiving Christ, accepting Him and believing in His name. Period.

The nature of God is within those who are His children for they are born again of Him, they have His nature.

The seed of the indomitable God is within everyone who is born of God. It is that new person who we are in Christ which makes overcoming not only possible but natural. Hence John’s sweeping statement – everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. 1 John 5:4

God is never overcome by anything – by definition and by His nature, by virtue of who He is, He overcomes everything.

We are born of Him, we are His offspring and therefore posses the same nature and inherent capability to overcome the world. After all, 1 John 4:4 gives us the blatant truth that Christ (who overcame the world) who is in us is greater than him who is in the world, i.e. the evil one – Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.

Becoming an overcomer is not a matter of exerting effort or exercise but believing the truth about the new nature and allowing it natural expression.

And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. 1 John 5:5b

Ephesians 4:24
and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.

You are not called to stress and fuss about overcoming the world but have already been born into the nature of God whose nature is indomitable, undefeatable. You now just need to give that new nature or person expression through faith and training in godliness.

Titus 2:11 — 12
For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age,

1 Timothy 4:8
for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.

Believe the word and train in godliness as an expression of your faith.

The only tool the enemy has in delaying or temporarily thwarting our overcoming is deception. If he can get us to believe his lies instead of God’s truth, he’ll succeed in deceiving us that we are not or cannot be overcomers. You decide who you want to believe. I have.
