Psalms 15:1-2
“O LORD, who shall sojourn in your tent?
Who shall dwell on your holy hill?
He who walks blamelessly and does what is right and speaks truth in his heart;”
Living one’s life blamelessly (with integrity) and making the practice of doing what is right one’s lifestyle are essential prerequisites for sharing God’s dwelling place. These are foundational and fundamental common ground for sharing the presence and life of God. If one is to occupy the same abode as God and enjoy fellowship with Him, one has to live His values, practise and uphold them daily in one’s own life with everything and everyone without exception. Otherwise one is living a lie or practising self deception if one thinks one is sharing God’s abode and His life without espousing and living the principal values and attributes of God as detailed in the verse above. Here is what the New Testament has to say about this in 1 John 1:5-6:
This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you (LOUD & CLEAR), that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all (NONE WHATSOEVER). If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.”
One’s life has to be an embodiment of God’s values – integrity, righteousness and truthfulness in one’s heart – if one desires to travel on the same highway with God.
Psalms 24:3-5
” Who shall ascend the hill of the LORD?
And who shall stand in his holy place?
He who has clean hands and a pure heart,”
Not only is the qualification required doing what is right but also accommodating only the pure and good in one’s heart; having place in one’s heart for only those thoughts which are “…true, honourable, just, pure, lovely, commendable, excellent, worthy of praise….” (Philippians 4:8).
God has never been interested in our actions only but in our attitudes too in equal measure, in our heart’s position and what is in it – “But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” (Matthew 5:28) And why is that? The Lord provides the answer Himself in Matthew 12:34-35 “…For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. The good person out of his good treasure brings forth good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure brings forth evil.” In other words, what comes out and is displayed in words and action is what is resident inside, what is resident within. What is not resident within cannot be evident without. It is from within the heart that which is good or bad emanates, not from anywhere else. It is one or the other – Matthew 12:33 “Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree bad and its fruit bad, for the tree is known by its fruit.”
Hence God’s undiminished interest in the attitude of our hearts and the pressing and unending need to consistently keep watch over what is allowed entry and given residence therein – “Above everything else guard your heart, because from it flow the springs of life.” (Proverbs 4:23). It is from there, from the heart that the spring of one’s life flows. It is what is in one’s heart that translates into one’s life and nothing else, nothing at all.
Hence the need to set it on the right path and diligently guard it there too.
Listen, my son, and be wise, and set your heart on the right path: (Prov 22:19 )
It is neither foolish nor silly but wisdom to set one’s heart on the right path, on the path of God, on The Way, The Truth and The life.
