The 8-week Community Bible Experience we conducted had a twofold purpose:
First and foremost it was to help establish a solid foundation for our lives as disciples of the Lord as per John 8:31- a life of personal and direct engagement with God through His word. Secondly, it was to achieve a very specific target of completing an overview of the New Testament. It definitely was not just a reading exercise.
So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My word, you are truly My disciples. John 8:31
True discipleship necessitates our diligently pressing on in Christ’s words. Not doing is so is rejecting discipleship.
This is the basics of discipleship. Doing the basic things right is an essential prerequisite for success in any area of life. Success is achieved by those who do the basic things right and what we were doing in this exercise is establishing the absolute basics of true discipleship.
The life of a disciple is one that is continually engaging with God through His word and continuing to grow in it too. The key is to engage with God through His word everyday with quality time – however small.
It is the people who have a life of engagement with God through His word who are not only true disciples but those who experience the liberating power of Christ (John 8:32) and lasting fruitfulness that comes from continuing in His word (John 15:8).
And now I commend you to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified.
